This is one of England’s most special places and there is much to discover - a stunning landscape of open heather moors and peatlands, attractive dales and hay meadows, tumbling upland rivers, wonderful woods, welcoming communities, intriguing imprints of a mining and industrial past and an abundance of distinctive birds, animals and plants. The Heritage site of Hadrian’s Wall is nearby. Alston, the highest market town in England with galleries, cafes, pubs and steam railway, is 7 miles. The Lake District and Scottish Borderland are within 30 miles and the cities of Carlisle, Newcastle and Edinburgh will make an interesting day out. A good pub serving food is 1 mile. Shop 5 miles. Carlisle still has some of its ancient walls standing, as well as a Norman castle, and the western part of Hadrian’s Wall is nearby. Other places of interest include Penrith, with its castle and remarkably unchanged market square; Keswick, which was once the centre of pencil manufacturing; the busy market town of Kendal and Cockermouth, Wordsworth’s birthplace
